Active Recall Explained for Students
Rereading your notes and feeling like you know the material is the most common way students fool themselves before an exam.

Here's a test: close your notes right now and try to write out, from memory, the last topic you "revised." If that feels harder than you expected, you've just found the gap between recognising information and being able to produce it — which is exactly the gap an exam tests.
What active recall actually is
Active recall means retrieving information from memory instead of looking at it. That's the whole idea — closing the book and writing what you remember, answering a flashcard before flipping it, or attempting a past question before checking the mark scheme. It's the opposite of rereading, highlighting, or copying notes, all of which let you stay in "recognition" mode: the material looks familiar, so it feels learned, even when you couldn't produce it unprompted.
Why it feels harder — and why that's the point
Rereading is comfortable because you're not being tested. Recall is uncomfortable because you find out, immediately, what you don't actually know. That discomfort is useful information, not a sign you're doing it wrong.
Recognition and recall are not the same skill
A multiple-choice question tests recognition — can you pick the right answer out of four options, one of which is probably obviously wrong. An essay question, a "state and explain" answer, or a Maths problem with no options tests recall — can you produce the answer with nothing to jog your memory but the question itself. Most WASSCE and BECE papers include both, but objective sections often overstate how much students actually know, because recognising a fact is much easier than recalling it. If your revision only involves reading and rereading, you're training recognition and hoping it transfers to recall on the harder sections. It often doesn't.
How to actually do it
- Closed-book summary. After studying a topic, close everything and write down everything you remember about it, in your own words, before checking what you missed.
- Flashcards, used properly. The value isn't in making them — it's in trying to answer before flipping, every time, even when you're sure you know it.
- Practice questions before notes. When revising a topic you've already covered once, attempt a past question on it first, then use your notes only to check or fill gaps — not the other way round.
- Teach it out loud. Explaining a topic to someone else (or even to an empty room) forces you to organise and produce the information, which is recall in a different form.
Applying it to WASSCE and BECE revision
The most direct version of active recall for exam prep is past questions: attempt them cold, under some time pressure, before you check the marking scheme or your notes. For subjects like Social Studies, RME, and Government where you need to "explain" or "state" specific points, flashcards work well for drilling the exact phrasing WAEC rewards. For Maths and Science, working through problems from memory — not copying a method you're looking at — builds the same muscle. Either way, the test is the same: can you produce the answer, not just recognise that it looks right.
It works better paired with spacing
Active recall tells you *how* to revise a topic; it doesn't by itself tell you *when*. Testing yourself on the same material five times in one evening has limited extra value after the first couple of attempts. Spreading those recall sessions out over days and weeks — reviewing a topic again just as you're starting to forget it — is what makes the effect compound.
