How to Study Mathematics Effectively
"I understand it but I make silly mistakes" and "I don't understand it" are two completely different problems. Most students treat them the same way.

"I understand the topic but I keep making mistakes" and "I genuinely don't understand this topic" get treated as the same problem by most students — more revision, more practice questions, more time. They're not the same problem, and they don't have the same fix.
Find out which problem you actually have
Sit a timed set of past questions on a topic and mark it carefully against the actual marking scheme, not just the final answer. Then sort your mistakes into three categories:
- Conceptual gaps — you didn't know the method, or used the wrong one entirely.
- Careless errors — you knew the method, but made an arithmetic slip, misread the question, or dropped a sign.
- Time pressure — you knew what to do but didn't finish, or rushed the last few questions.
Most students discover their errors are mostly the second and third kind, not the first — which means more "studying" in the sense of reading explanations won't help much. What helps is different for each category, covered below.
If it's a conceptual gap: rebuild it from a worked example, then do it yourself
Find a fully worked example of the topic — not just the final answer, the full method with reasoning at each step. Work through it once following along, then close it and attempt a similar question from memory. If you get stuck, that's exactly where your gap is — go back to that specific step, not the whole topic. Repeat with two or three more questions on the same topic before moving on. Understanding a worked example is not the same as being able to reproduce the method yourself — this is the same active recall principle covered in Active Recall Explained for Students, applied to Maths specifically: you have to attempt the problem yourself, not just watch someone else solve it.
If it's careless errors: slow down the checking, not the working
Careless errors usually come from one habit: moving to the next line before confirming the current one is right. A few concrete fixes that actually change this:
- Write every step, even ones you could do in your head — it gives you something to check and makes it easier to find where an error crept in.
- After finishing a question, estimate roughly what the answer should look like and check your actual answer against that estimate. A probability answer greater than 1, or a triangle's angles not summing to 180°, should jump out immediately.
- Double-check the specific things you personally get wrong most often — for most students it's sign errors, misreading a decimal, or copying a number wrong from one line to the next. You'll know your own pattern once you start tracking mistakes instead of just moving past them.
If it's time pressure: practice under the actual exam timing, not untimed
A lot of Maths revision happens with no clock running, which builds a false sense of readiness — you can solve a problem in fifteen minutes with no pressure and still run out of time in an exam where you have three or four minutes per question. Once you understand the methods, shift your practice to timed conditions specifically. If you consistently run out of time, look at where the minutes are actually going — often it's one or two question types you're slow at, not the whole paper.
Method marks matter even when your final answer is wrong
WAEC awards marks for correct method and correct working, not just the final number. Showing your steps clearly can earn most of the marks on a question even if you make a small error near the end — skipping straight to an answer risks losing marks you'd otherwise have kept.
Don't let one bad topic stall the rest of your revision
It's common to get stuck on one topic — Vectors, or Probability, or Circle Theorems — and let it eat disproportionate time while easier marks elsewhere go unpracticed. If a topic isn't clicking after a couple of focused sessions, move on and come back to it later with fresh eyes, rather than spending an entire evening on it at the expense of everything else on the syllabus.
